MUNICIPAL LIBRARY - Biblioteca Comunale

The former church and monastery of the Eremiti of S. Agostino hosts the library from 1933. The structure, which is inspired by the Sicilian late-Gothic style, consists of the church built in 1486 by the Taorminian people in honour of St. Sebastian and the monastery built by the Augustinian Friars in 1530. On the outside, one can admire the elegant bell tower, which has the shape of a small embattled tower and the portal made up of a large Taormina marble architrave, which in 1700 replaced the original one in the Gothic style. The Library has a book heritage of more than 22,000 volumes, some of which were edited from 1600 to 1800, with over 2,000 volumes in the section dedicated to books on Sicily. Of great value are also the altar-piece portraying the martyrdom of S. Sebastiano and other paintings kept in the room of the Ancient Fund.
