Ancient theater - Teatro Antico di Taormina

Among the most famous monuments in Taormina is the Ancient Theater, which in size is the second in Sicily after the one of Syracuse. The break opened by time has enriched it with the enchanting view on the Gulf of Schisò, dominated by the impressive Etna shape. The construction of the theater probably begins by the Greeks around the 3rd century. BC, at the time of Gerone II. The structure was then restored and enlarged by the Romans, who inserted columns, statues and the ingenious covering. Born to play host to dramatic or musical performances, it transformed in the Roman period to stage gladiator games and naval battles. This led to the expansion of the orchestra, which in the Greek era was destined for the players, so as to be adapted to the new arena purpose. The cavea, that is the room for the terraces, has a diameter of about 109 meters and is divided into nine sections. On the top there is a double porch, covered by a vault. On the wall of the porch thirty-six small niches open, that perhaps had to accommodate some statues. The scene, the most important part of the Theater, that partially retains its original form, has three large openings, flanked by niches and columns replaced in the 19th century. For years now, the Taormina theater is the splendid setting for cultural events and international prizes.
